What’s my purpose?

Do you ever wonder what your purpose in life is? Countless people don’t, and may well consider it something unimportant (what difference does it make?) or unattainable (can I really ever know?). I want to tell you it is important, and it is attainable! Here’s an exercise I use with my clients to help them discover what their purpose in life is.

Go for a walk for an hour, preferably somewhere beautiful like a park. Reflect on the following three questions in order:

My 1+2 plan for time mastery

become a master of time management

Recently, I launched my 10 Commandments of Time Mastery. Since then I have had a lot of great feedback on it, in particular the 1+2 Plan, a simple way of planning and prioritising that allows you to focus. This builds on Chet Holmes’s approach, and I’ve built on it and worked it into my routine.

Here’s how it works: list the six most important things you need to get done the next day.

3 eating excellence tips for busy mums and dads

As a dad of 3 young girls, I can confidently say that being a parent is one of the greatest joys in life. It’s also one of the greatest challenges! There’s plenty of advice in print and online about how to deal with those challenges well – looking at behaviour, education, play and everything else imaginable.

But perhaps you’ve never thought of getting advice about eating well? I’ve found it to be a hugely significant part of parenting. If you’re thinking about this for the first time then I’ve pulled together some tips to help (more…)

“He who knows most grieves most for wasted time” – Dante
One of the things I talk about most often here on nickchatrath.com is time management (check out my three part series for some of my favourite tips.) We all have the same amount of time in each day, yet the decisions we make about how to use it can be the difference between productivity and chaos.

5 tips to tame technology

Personal technology has the potential to make us more productive than ever before. I’m convinced that wearables can supercharge your personal performance, and we’re only at the beginning of figuring out what these new devices and apps are going to mean for us.

Why I will now blog only once a week

Since January 2016 I have been blogging twice a week. However, from next Monday I will blog only once a week. Why?

It would be understandable if your immediate thoughts were ‘It’s too much work for Nick’ or ‘The blogs aren’t working’. It does take a lot to generate a good blog post, but effort isn’t the primary reason why I’m decreasing the frequency. And from the user feedback I’m receiving, many are finding these posts useful. The real reason is the need to focus as my team and I are about to launch a new on-line business called Coachify.

Amongst other things, I currently coach some high performance individuals around the world to transform their productivity by using their personal data and wearable technology (e.g. Fitbit). Just as any large company uses data to improve their performance, Coachify can help a person improve their individual performance using wearables and our unique data analysing platform.

One of my most important values is excellence. I am determined to be the best and continuously try to improve my thinking, work, self and service to my clients. I am applying that here to Coachify and giving it the extra time it needs to launch well. I do not want the quality of blog posts to diminish as a result, hence the reduction in quantity.

So please keep reading, keep commenting, and keep using the insights to increase your productivity, performance and impact. I look forward to our continued journey together.

Watch when you eat

So much in life is a matter of timing. A good joke can be ruined with a mis-timed punchline, helpful feedback can be rejected if delivered at the wrong moment, and a top-quality steak can go from delicious to inedible in a matter of seconds.

The same is true when it comes to your health. If you’re trying to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle, studies have shown it’s just as important to watch when you eat as what you’re eating.

Blue light spells danger

These days we’re surrounded by screens. Whether it’s our laptops, our tablets, or our phones, we’re looking at screens for huge proportions of our day. And they’re no longer exclusively used at work, having come to dominate our leisure time as well.

None of that will come as a surprise. However, did you know that these screens are usually tinted blue? And that research has shown time and time again that blue light stops us from getting a good night’s sleep?

One thing at a time

“One may walk over the highest mountain one step at a time.” – John Wanamaker (1838-1922), U.S. Postmaster General

On nickchatrath.com I talk about many ways in which you can maximise performance in different areas of your life – diet, fitness, performance, sleep, purpose, mindset and more. If you’ve made a decision to work on your performance, then well done!

But here’s a tip – don’t try and do it all at once. As John Wanamaker reminds us in the quote above, great things are possible, but only if you take one step after another.

8 tips to fuel your leadership by improving your mindset

Each tip takes 7 minutes or less to do

Perhaps you remember my recent blog about Bill Lear and Learjet (why not check it out if you haven’t read it yet?).

Having debuted his pioneering invention, he quickly ran into problems. Instead of becoming discouraged, he worked to overcome them and became hugely successful. He always knew his business could be a success, and that belief fuelled his actions.

Our mindset is powerful – the things we believe have a direct impact on the things we do. That’s why the best leaders have the best mindset.
